Embrace the holiday season with a joyful spirit! While we’re surrounded by holiday cheer, the gatherings with loved ones, scrumptious feasts, and thoughtful gifts can sometimes bring on a bit of stress. So, let’s explore some evidence-based practices to keep you grounded and fully present during this festive time.

First and foremost, set your intention to make the most of the holiday season and relish every moment. Psychologist Barbara Fredrickson’s research reveals that embracing positive emotions makes us more receptive to future positivity, ensuring even more good vibes in the days to come.

We understand that time constraints and financial pressures can be major stressors during this season. To combat this, create a realistic budget that accounts for actual expenses, not just rough estimates. When planning your holiday activities and visits, allow some extra time for flexibility, which will help ease any stress related to time management.

Let’s simplify things a bit. If tradition involves gift-giving, consider the gift of your time spent together. Numerous studies consistently show that investing in experiences and relationships contributes more to our overall happiness.

Gratitude is a game-changer. In a study involving people who considered themselves seriously depressed, they were asked to jot down three good things that happened each day for 15 days. Remarkably, 94 percent of these participants reported a reduction in depression, and 92 percent said their happiness had surged.

Whenever you feel that generous urge, act on it. Witness the expansive feelings in your body and mind when you make someone happy through your genuine generosity, without expecting anything in return.

Volunteering your time or helping others is another wonderful way to uplift your spirits and expand your social circle. For instance, bring soup to a sick friend or share a coffee with your elderly neighbor.

Don’t let the holidays turn into something you dread. Instead, take proactive steps to ward off the stress and blues that can occasionally creep in during this special time of year.
