Jonathon Smith, Sarah Maddry, Nicki Carpenter, and Catherine Shelley, 4-H Agents for N.C. Cooperative Extension, were recognized for a collaborative county achievement during the 2022 North Carolina Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development Professionals Annual Conference held on September 8th, 2022.
These agents received both the Jim Kahler Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Award and the Diversity & Inclusion: Expanding the 4-H Audience Award. Burke, Orange, and Richmond Counties partnered to host the Sourdough Citizen Science Project for 103 youth ages 11-18 in January 2021. The team created videos and other digital resources to help participants learn to use their starters to bake sourdough products. Data collected supported NC State’s Wild Sourdough Project.
The purpose of the North Carolina Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development Professionals is to promote the profession of Extension 4-H and youth work in North Carolina. The 4-H program is the youth education program of North Carolina Cooperative Extension, based at North Carolina State and North Carolina A&T State Universities. More than 260,000 young people ages 5 through 18 participate in North Carolina 4-H activities each year with the help of 16,700 adult and youth volunteers.
