Today’s program is on Lettuce, a well known and well grown leafy green vegetable that many use for salads and other dishes. I think everyone at this point has encountered lettuce before. Here in Burke County, we can grow it twice in our growing season. Once in the Spring and once in the fall. When planting, Lettuce needs about 12 inches between each plant to allow for maturity. Lettuce can be sowed directly or transplanted. When planting by seed, you want to sow about 1/4th to 3/8th of an inch deep. Later in March and early April can be great times to start Lettuce in our area. Early spring plantings are less likely to have insect problems. So it's an easier time for lettuce, especially with the cooler temps. Lettuce enjoys temperate weather of about 60 to 65 degrees for optimum growth.
