Sophia Mozgala, Summer Intern
This is Sophia Mozgala, the 4-H Summer Intern with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Burke Center. Today I want to inform you about vermicomposting.
Have you or anyone you know thought about composting, but then thought, “I don’t want to deal with the smell,” or “That’s a lot of work that I don’t have time for.” Well, there’s a solution to that, vermicomposting! This form of composting uses worms to do all the work in half the time of normal composting. It also takes up less space and if done properly has very minimal smell. Vermicomposting produces high-quality fertilizer and requires less labor and maintenance than the normal composting practices. Using this practice requires a lot of worms, a large tupperware box and lid, and any shredded paper, decaying leaves, or produce scraps you have around the house. All together this is the perfect environment for worms to create rich fertilizer for your soil. So if you want to start on this summer project check out NC State Extension and search for vermicomposting or give our office a call for any questions you may have about this project.
