Chainsaw Safety

As we get back to normal and begin cleaning up the after effects of Hurricane Helene, we need to ensure that we are being safe. Chainsaws are a powerful tool and we need to know some chainsaw basics before cleaning up.

Ensure that your work area is clean and you have a good “escape route”. Trees can be unpredictable. Mobility is important when working with trees. To help combat these variables, they make PPE that can protect you from such accidents. Glasses and face shields are great to protect your eyes from the sawdust and debris that will occur when cutting. Gloves and chaps should be worn to help protect from the actual ripping part of the saw, but a helmet can save your life just as easily. Head injuries and impacts are serious and can be life threatening.

One of the most common causes of injuries is due to kickback.  Kickback occurs when the chain hits material and is forced up and back toward the upper body and head region. This is where that chain brake comes in handy as the action should cause the brake to engage. As with any chore, having a good, well maintained, tool will make the job easier. Just like a car can break down if not kept up, so can your chainsaw. Keeping your chain sharp and your saw running properly will ensure a smooth and safe clean up. Check out your local small engine mechanics and hardware stores for yearly chainsaw tune-ups!
