This is Taylor Campbell, horticulture extension agent with North Carolina Cooperative Extension Burke Center. Today’s program is on July gardening tasks.

Many crops are ready to harvest in July, such as squash, cabbage, greens, blueberries, brussels sprouts, cucumbers, zucchini, watermelon, and tomatoes. Keep an eye out for garden pests such as squash vine borer, June beetles, Japanese beetles, and aphids as these pests become more active this time of year.

Coneflower, irises, coral bells, daylilies, and Black-eyed Susan can also be divided in July.

Tropical houseplants can be placed outside this time of year, as the heat and humidity helps them thrive.

Be sure to check your rain gauge and determine if your garden needs more water. Of course, you want to avoid excessive watering so it is always a good idea to observe how your plants are looking. Do they suddenly look wilted and tender? Consider watering soon.
