This is Taylor Campbell, Horticulture Extension Agent with the North Carolina
Cooperative Extension, Burke Center. Our program today is about house plants. While many of us are still gearing up for spring gardening, we may find ourselves needing an outlet while indoors. Using houseplants to create an indoor jungle has proven to be not only trendy, but good for our health! NASA has conducted studies that indicate that plants such as snake plants, English ivy, ZZ plant, and pothos actually purify the air in our homes. When choosing houseplants, it is important to consider lighting, level of care, and whether the plants are safe to have around any pets you may have. Snake plant, ZZ plant, and pothos are great low-light,
low-maintenance plants. Cacti and succulents make great plants for high light situations. For all you pet parents, calathea, nerve plant, and prayer plant make great starter plants that are safe for both cats and dogs. However, the most important thing to remember about indoor plant care is that it is all about trial and error.
