This is Brandi Silver, FCS agent with the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Burke County Center. Today our program is packed with more holiday health tips.

Sometimes, we hear messages like this on the radio or between our favorite songs in the morning, and it illuminates something inside of us, and sometimes we don’t think anything else about it. I hope this one sticks with you.

To brighten your holiday season, let these researched based practices guide you to stay grounded and present throughout the holidays and maybe carry a little of that spirit during the new year!

Practice gratitude. In a study, people who considered themselves severely depressed were asked to write down three good things that happened each day for 15 days. At the end of the experiment, 94 percent of these subjects had a decrease in depression and 92 percent said their happiness increased.

Whenever you feel the impulse to be generous, act on it. When you do, notice the expansive feelings in your body and mind. Without expecting anything in return, notice how good it feels inside when you see someone happy because of your sincere generosity.

Volunteering your time or doing something to help others also is a good way to lift your spirits and broaden your friendships. For example, take a sick friend soup or have coffee with your elderly neighbor.

Don’t let the holidays become something you dread. Instead, take steps to prevent the stress and depression that can swoop in during the holidays.

This has been Brandi Silver with the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Burke County Center wishing you a healthy and memorable holiday. For more information, contact us 764-9480.
