This is Brandi Silver, FCS agent with the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Burke County Center. Our program today is a part of our healthy home series.
Today we are going to direct our attention to your home electrical system. Every year electrical products are associated with injuries, fires and deaths. We are going to talk about ways to spot possible safety concerns within the home to keep your family and home safe.
Start by inspecting all indoor and outdoor outlets and switches to ensure they are in safe, working condition. They should be cool to the touch. Improperly operating outlets and switches may indicate that an unsafe wiring condition exists. A loose screw holding a wire or a worn out switch can lead to overheating, or a fire.
Trip the circuit breakers and test ground fault interrupters to ensure proper protection. If the switches are not labeled, take time to do that. GFCIs can prevent electrocution so be sure they are working. These are usually located in spaces where the risk of electric shock is higher.
Inspect electrical cords throughout the home. Damaged cords may have exposed live wires that can be shock and fire hazards. Check your entertainment equipment and be sure air can circulate freely. Blocking air flow to equipment can cause overheating and is a possible fire hazard.
Contact a licensed electrician if you find any hazards that need professional attention.
