This is Taylor Lynn, Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent, with the
N.C. Cooperative Extension, Burke County Center. Our program today is
“New Dietary Guidelines for Americans”. You may have heard that the USDA has
released a new set of dietary guidelines for Americans.

The primary goal is simple: focus on real, whole foods more often. These
guidelines encourage building meals around nutrient-dense foods like high quality
proteins, full fat, dairy, a variety of fruits and vegetables. Whole grains and healthy
fats.

Additionally, it is recommended that individuals cut back on highly processed
foods, added sugars, and alcoholic beverages. This isn't about following a strict
diet or changing everything at once. It's about small realistic steps, like choosing to
cook at home, choosing water over sugary drinks, or adding more fruits and
vegetables to meals that you already enjoy. You can find these new dietary
guidelines at realfood.gov. Here, you can explore specific recommendations for
your age group, as well as serving size information.
