Hello, this is Donna Teasley, Horticulture Agent with the North Carolina Cooperative
Extension, Burke Center.
Okay all you lawn guys out there. Remember all those phones calls you made to me back in the spring about chickweed? Remember that I told you it was a winter weed and could best be controlled in the fall not the spring? Well, it’s time. It’s up and growing and now is the time to spray for good control next spring. You want to kill it now before it gets big enough to make seeds.
So, go out and buy a broadleaf weed killer that is labeled for chickweed. A liquid works better than a granular product for broadleaf weed control. Many products out there contain more than one herbicide. That’s why they can control such a long list of weeds. Don’t spray within 24 hours of expected rain because rain can and will wash away your pesticide. If you’re thinking about overseeding or reseeding, check the label before applying any herbicide.
You don’t have to go out and spray today but it should be done before temperatures start to drop into the low forties on a regular basis. By spraying for chickweed, you’ll probably knockout out some other winter weeds also. Henbit, hairy bittercress and Carolina geranium can all be killed by spraying in the fall.
It’s all about timing so get out there and take care of those weeds before they become problems.
