What are School Enrichment Programs?
4-H School Enrichment Programs are hands-on learning experiences for students that take place during school hours. The programs are designed to support the school curriculum and are taught by Cooperative Extension staff or trained volunteers and teachers. School Enrichment Programs are research-based and align with the state's Standard Course of Study. The programs are offered in public, private and homeschool settings.
Embryology
2nd Grade: Hatching Classroom Project The Hatching Classroom Project aligns with 2nd grade Essential Standard-Structures and Functions of Living Organisms. Developers of the Hatching Curriculum designed each lesson to be grade-level appropriate and have been correlated with U.S. National Science Education Standards.
The goal of the hatching program is for youth to learn about the development of an embryo within an egg, typically using chicken eggs, by incubating them and observing the hatching process firsthand, teaching basic life science concepts through hands-on experience with activities like candling eggs to monitor development and building a brooder for the newly hatched chicks.
An additional goal of this curriculum is to help students develop life skills. Beyond biology, students develop skills like data collection, observation, record keeping, problem-solving, and responsible animal care.
This curriculum meets the "Guidelines for Animals in North Carolina Public Schools" (2008) set forth the by the North Carolina Public Health Department.
Burke County 4-H offers this School Enrichment Program by providing Educator Training, access to equipment and supplies, and agent-led educational support activities.
