Today's Program is on seed starting. January and February are a great time to start your seeds in anticipation of warmer weather. The first step is to determine what you want to grow and secure your seed from a reliable source. The next step is to prepare your soil medium. Several companies make seed starting mixes to get you started. It's up to you to decide whether you want to use trays, cups, or even old egg cartons. It all depends on what you want to grow. Next is to water and care for your seedlings, warm water of about 80 degrees has been shown to help with germination. Your seeds will need about 8 to 10 hours of sunlight. Once your seedlings have sprouted and are looking healthy, it's time to start hardening off, the process of exposing your plants to the outdoors. They may need some fertilizer for a boost, but after that your plants should be ready for the growing season.
