Spooky season is here! Keep Halloween fun, not frightening, with these simple safety tips for the whole family.
Before the Big Night
- Be visible: Choose bright costumes or add reflective tape, glow sticks, or other lights to darker costumes.
- Choose costumes carefully: Make sure costumes fit properly, don’t drag on the ground, and are made of flame-resistant materials.
- Make a plan: Children under 12 should trick-or-treat with an adult. For older children going without an adult, agree on a well-lit route and curfew. Remind them to stay with their group, never enter a stranger’s home, and carry a cell phone.
During Trick-or-Treating
- Make sure masks and costumes don’t interfere with vision or breathing.
- Visit well-lit homes and carry a flashlight or glow stick.
- Use sidewalks whenever possible. If there is no sidewalk, walk along the edge of the road facing traffic.
- Walk, don’t run, and watch carefully for vehicles near driveways and parked cars.
- Wait until a trusted adult has checked all treats before eating them.
After Trick-or-Treating
- Check the candy: Discard treats that are open, damaged, or appear unsafe. Remove choking hazards, such as hard candy or gum, from young children.
- Watch for allergens: Check labels carefully for children with food allergies or dietary restrictions. Swap unsafe treats for allergy-friendly options or small toys.
- Protect those smiles: Halloween means extra sweets! Encourage children to brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between their teeth to help prevent cavities.
A little preparation can help ensure everyone has a safe, happy, and spooktacular Halloween!
