Did you know that hunger affects every community in North Carolina? In Burke County alone, over 13,000 people are food insecure. When people lack access to adequate and healthy foods, their health and well-being suffers. Children are unable to concentrate in school, and people of all ages are more likely to be sick.
Although there are several programs that help people access food, the largest federal program is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly called Food Stamps. In North Carolina it is called FNS, Food and Nutrition Services.
Many households depend on the monthly food supplement, yet many others are not aware that they may qualify for this assistance.
The N.C. Cooperative Extension, Burke County Center offers an outreach program called More In My Basket, which provides education about FNS. Through More In My Basket, participants learn if they are likely eligible for FNS, how FNS can expand their food budget, and receive individualized assistance with completing an application.
Find out if your household may be eligible; a quick three minute phone call can be the difference between your next evening meal, or going to bed hungry.
