This is Brandi Silver, FCS agent with the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Burke County Center.  Our program today is about eating healthy on a budget.

Making a plan before heading to the store can help you get organized, save money, and choose healthy options. Begin by planning your weekly meals. Take inventory of what you already have. Look in your cabinets, refrigerator and freezer. Save money by using these items in the upcoming week. It is beneficial to write out your meals and snacks for the week. Having a plan and sticking to it will save you money. There are many websites that list low-cost, healthy meals.  You can even plug in the items you have on hand to search recipe ideas.  I can help you find these resources if you need assistance! Your weekly schedule is an important aspect to consider when planning meals. Plan to save the ones that take longer to prepare for days when family members are available to help or days off. Leftovers are an excellent way to save time and money.  Recipes that make larger quantities are great for a heat and serve option on busy days. Be sure to make a grocery list. Many people find it easier to build the shopping list throughout the week by adding items that need to be replenished. Organize your shopping list by sections in the grocery store.  This makes shopping quick and easy. You can be successful in eating healthy on a budget. If you need or want help planning meals, please reach out.
