Brandi Silver
Attention all gardeners, preservers, and homesteaders! This is Brandi Silver, FCS agent with the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Burke Center. The Drexel Agricultural Fair is just around the corner, running from August 19-24 at the Drexel Fair Grounds. It's time to show off your hard work and enter your preserved goods for a chance to win a blue ribbon and cash prize!
There are over 100 categories to enter in the preserved foods section so pick your favorites and bring them to the fairgrounds for judging. Remember, all vegetables except tomatoes should be canned in a pressure canner, while fruits, pickles, jams, and juices should be processed in a hot water bath. If canning isn't your preferred method, you can also exhibit dried fruits and vegetables in pint or quart jars.
Judges will evaluate entries based on USDA-approved methods, uniform size, optimal packing, efficient use of jar space, texture, color, and even flavor in some cases. Whether you’ve canned a beautiful jar of lima beans or created a delicious batch of fruit leather, this is your chance to shine!
For detailed categories and specifications, check the fair book or call the Extension office to speak with our FCS agent. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to showcase your preserving skills at the fair this year! Bring your best efforts, join the fun, and celebrate the harvest with us.
