Extra vegetables were grown in community and private gardens in Watauga County to help with the need for food during the pandemic.

During the height of the pandemic, many more families experienced food insecurity. As a result, the community gardens tended by Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteers served as a critical source of fresh, healthy food.

Extension Master Gardener volunteers of Burke County delivered fresh vegetables to seniors.

Meanwhile, the interest in growing food at home dramatically increased. Families that started gardening for the first time during the pandemic sought guidance from knowledgeable Master Gardener volunteers all across the state.

A family in Wake County chose seeds from a free seed library established by an Extension Master Gardener.
