Now, that everyone is spending more time at home, you may find yourself doing more laundry, which can result in elevated water bills and electricity. This is especially true if you have college students that have returned home to complete the academic year online. There are a few ways that you can save money that is attributed to doing the laundry. Here are a few tips:

  • Use warm or cold water instead of hot. This will save money on the energy bill. Look for the “he” symbol on detergents to determine if they work great on cold and warm water washes.
  • Whether you use a small or full load, the washer still uses the same amount of energy, so wash a full load of clothes.
  • If you can air-dry the clothes. We don’t see many clotheslines, today, but air drying is a great way to save on energy use.
  • Don’t overload the dryer, it will take longer to dry the clothes.
  • Dry heavier clothes, towels, etc. separately from lighter-weight clothes. This will allow lighter weight clothes to dry quicker.
  • Set your washer for high speed or the extended spin cycle. This will help the clothes to release more water before drying.
  • Always clean the lint filter in your dryer before you use it. This will allow the air to flow easily and maintain your dryer.
