Annual Small Fruit Plant Sale 2020

— Written By and last updated by

It’s January and Extension’s Small Fruit Plant Sale is now in progress. We will be taking orders now through February 28th and the plants will be delivered in March. We are offering varieties that are well suited to Burke County growing conditions, giving gardeners an opportunity to purchase plants that will grow and produce in our specific climate.

We are offering 2 varieties of strawberries, Sweet Charlie and Chandler. Three varieties of blueberries are available this year, Premier, Vernon and Titan. By planting all of these varieties you can extend your harvest time through the majority of the summer. Also available are Navaho and Von, mid-season producing thornless blackberries with large, sweet fruit along with a new raspberry, Double Gold that can withstand our hot, humid summer temps. We’re offering Seedless Mars, a dark blue grape and Seedless Thompson, a white grape. Also available are Cowart and Carlos muscadines. Our fig offering this year will be Brown Turkey.

This year’s tree fruits are semi-dwarf apple trees, Pink Lady, Honey Crisp, Granny Smith, Gala and Winesap. We are offering  a new item this year, elderberry. This berry has become wildly popular in the last few years. It does, however, require a pollinator so we will sell this plant as a pair of two different cultivars in order to insure adequate pollination. Also available again is the Fuyu persimmon.

In addition to our fruit selections, Jersey Giant asparagus crowns will be available. Other non-fruit items include two ornamental cherries, Kwanzan and Yoshino. Their early-spring flowers let us know that spring is close!

Orders can be placed by calling the Extension office at 828-764-9480. Printable order forms as well as more information on the varieties offered are available on our website at A deposit of 25% is required on all orders of $100 or more. All other orders can be paid when plants are picked up. Pick up days will be March 18 & 19, 2020.
