The Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteers of Dare County celebrated their new graduates and a successful year at their annual appreciation dinner on Thursday, December 5, 2019, at the Sea Ranch Hotel in Nags Head.

The purpose of the Extension Master Gardener℠ program of Dare County is to provide current, research-based home horticulture information and education to the citizens of Dare County. Master Gardener℠ volunteers are individuals with an active interest in horticulture that receive extensive horticulture training through the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service.

Congratulations! 17 New Master Gardener Volunteers

This year’s class received over 50 hours of education and volunteered over 40 hours each for an outstanding class total of over 1,000 hours! 17 were presented with their official Master Gardener volunteer Certification certificates and name badges. The Newest Extension Master Gardner volunteers of Dare County are; Judy Carter, Mary Lou DiGrassie, Marianne Dubresson, Lorraine Elkerton, Jerry Fiedler, Dona Fiedler, Patricia Fields, Hope Guiley, Tanta Luckhardt-Hendricks, Lynn Murray, Harvey Murray, Louise Norko, Annette Robertson-Geesin, Barbara Schultz, Donna Walker, Tammy Watkins, Sara Zimmerman.

Celebrating Our Current Master Gardener Volunteers

The achievements of our current Master Gardener volunteers were also celebrated that same evening. Every year, each Master Gardener volunteer re-certifies by volunteering a minimum of 20 hours and keeping current with at least 12 hours of continuing education classes. N.C. Cooperative Extension honors these achievements with Milestone Awards based on volunteer service hours and years of service.

The Extension Master Gardener volunteer Program of Dare County contributes significantly to the lives of North Carolina residents and local communities each year. In 2019, the Extension Master Gardener volunteers of Dare County volunteered more than 5,700 hours and obtained over 950 hours of continuing education. Their volunteer hours are estimated to be valued at $145,586.75 (based on Independent Sector value of $25.43/hour).
