The 4-H Youth Development Program provides youth with the chance to gain life skills in areas like leadership, citizenship, service learning, and public speaking, beyond the classroom in a positive and inclusive environment. I believe all youth deserve that opportunity to develop those skills. However, some youth are never exposed to all 4-H has to offer and they miss out on the chance to grow in those areas. Recently, some students at Marshville Elementary School with limited access to enrichment programs were given the chance to participate in the 4-H program due to a partnership with the school and Union County 4-H.

Marshville Elementary’s Assistant Principal Lindsay Merrit recalled her daughter’s involvement with the 4-H program’s summer day camps. She contacted the office in regards to a partnership between the school and youth development offer to develop a program with a vision to do activities for students to practice skills in the areas of leadership, citizenship, problem-solving, and goal setting in a hands-on and fun environment. The goal was to empower students to develop life skills so they can make lasting impacts in their home, school, and community. This program also inspired kids to pursue their passions that could lead to thriving careers.

During the program, eleven students played games to strengthen their public speaking skills, completed teambuilding challenges, learned the qualities of a good leader, created vision boards to learn about setting goals and made slime which was their favorite activity. Some of the most memorable activities done during those hours at the after-school program were serving the community by writing letters and making crafts and scarves for people in the community and donating clothes to The Closet with Heart for Monroe. Union County 4-H partnered with several community organizations when during their services projects during the series, in addition to Heart for Monroe including the Red Cross of Monroe and Jesse Helms Nursing Center.

When the after-school series finished at the end of February, several students indicated that they wanted to do more activities with 4-H and would recommend the 4-H program to a friend. They participated in activities within the realm of 4-H that they may not have been exposed to otherwise which was one of the main objectives of the partnership. The participants learned that their voice mattered and the importance of giving back to their community. 4-H Youth Development is known for providing youth with life skills to help them flourish in their future and a few more youth got the chance to experience what 4-H has to offer through this partnership with Marshville Elementary School.
