On Thursday, April 11th, high school students from East Burke, Draughn, Patton, Freedom and homeschools participated in the 2013 Youth in Government Day sponsored by Burke County Government and coordinated by Burke County Cooperative Extension. This event gave students an opportunity to learn more about county government. Students participating were able to tour and learn about 10 – 15 different departments within Burke County. Youth in Government Day was also a chance to spotlight how the county is utilizing technology and innovations. Participants learned about the day to day operations of the departments along with exploring ways they could be involved with county government as a career or as a volunteer. In addition, the Burke County Commissioners and staff joined the group for lunch and a question/answer session with the students. Special thanks to Greenway Public Transportation for providing a shuttle between the stops and the staff at the departments visited.
