Spring Williams-Byrd, County Extension Director of North Carolina Cooperative Extension in Burke County, has been recognized by the North Carolina chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi, a professional development organization for extension employees.

Byrd received the Distinguished Service Award at the annual meeting of Xi Chapter of ESP held in Raleigh in November. This award recognizes an ESP member who has contributed significantly to state Extension program planning and delivery for more than 20 years.

In North Carolina, extension work is supported by county governments, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, campus-based experts in North Carolina State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and North Carolina A&T State University’s School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. Field faculty in each county, backed by specialists at the state’s two land-grant universities, conduct educational programs related to sustaining agriculture and forestry; protecting the environment; maintaining viable communities; developing responsible youth; and developing strong, healthy and safe families.
