Burke County 4-Her, Evan Avery has been honored with the first place prize in the 2011 4-H Beekeeping Essay Contest. The North Carolina 4-H Entomology Program and the North Carolina State Beekeepers Association sponsor this contest annually.

Evan’s essay entitled “U.S. Honey: A Taste for Every Preference” discussed the various types and tastes of honey in the United States. Evan is a member of the Clever Clover 4-H Club and participates in the 4-H Beekeeping Project. Evan is the son of John and Leanne Avery.

The Burke County 4-H Beekeeping Project gives youth the opportunity to learn about beekeeping through a mentoring program with the Burke County Beekeepers Association. Youth in the program receive starter hives and are assigned a mentor as they learn all about the science of beekeeping.
